The recommended starting dose of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) for adults is 0.25 µg daily. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on blood tests and the amount of calcium in your blood.
While you are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), it is important that you follow any dietary suggestions your doctor has provided. Do not increase or decrease the amount of calcium in your diet without discussing the change with your doctor first.
Ensure that you are drinking enough fluid and do not become dehydrated while taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). Your doctor or pharmacist should be able to tell you how much fluid you need to be taking in.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Nonmedicinal ingredients: butylhydroxyanisole, butylhydroxytoluene, medium-chain triglycerides, gelatin, glycerol 85%, hydrogenated products of partially hydrolysed starch, titanium dioxide E171, red and yellow iron oxide E172.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the Nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Rocaltrol (Calcitriol).
Blood tests: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) causes changes to the amounts of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate in the blood. Your doctor will schedule regular blood tests to ensure that the levels of these minerals continue to be appropriate while you are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol).
Heart Arrhythmias: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) increases the amount of calcium in the bloodstream. Too much calcium can interfere with the regular rhythm of the heart. If you have irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) discuss with your doctor how Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Hypercalcemia: It is important to follow your doctor's instructions for taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). Hypercalcemia, or high blood calcium levels, can occur. To help prevent the risk of this, follow any dietary suggestions your doctor has provided. Do not increase or decrease the amount of calcium in your diet without discussing the change with your doctor first. Also, keep your appointments for blood tests to monitor your calcium levels. Symptoms of high blood calcium include bone pain, decreased appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, metallic taste in mouth, muscle pain, stomach ache, thirst, weakness, and weight loss. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
Pregnancy: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), contact your doctor immediately.
Breast-feeding: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may pass into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Children: The safety and efficacy of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) have not been established for children under the age of 18 years.
