The recommended starting dose of Loniten (Minoxidil) for adults is 5 mg given in 2 divided doses (i.e., 2.5 mg taken 2 times a day).
If the desired blood pressure is not achieved, your doctor may increase the dose to 10 mg daily after 3 days, 20 mg daily after an additional 3 days, and 40 mg daily after 3 more days. These are only guidelines. Some people may require higher doses to keep their blood pressure under control.
The dose for children less than 12 years of age is based on weight. The recommended dose is 0.2 mg per kilogram of body weight each day, divided into 2 equal doses and will be calculated by your doctor.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
Loniten (Minoxidil) is usually taken along with two other medications to help lower blood pressure and prevent side effects of Loniten (Minoxidil). It may be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Swallow Loniten (Minoxidil) whole with water or other liquids.
It is important to take Loniten (Minoxidil) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Call the doctor if you miss two or more doses in a row. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store Loniten (Minoxidil) at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
