The recommended initial dosage of Prostin VR (Alprostadil) is calculated by your doctor based on body weight. When the desired effect on the ductus arteriosus (a passageway in your baby's heart) is achieved, the infusion rate is usually decreased to the lowest possible dose while still maintaining the desired effect on the ductus arteriosus.
Prostin VR (Alprostadil) is usually given through a continuous intravenous infusion into a vein by a health care professional in a hospital setting. It can also be given into an artery at the opening of the ductus arteriosus.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. Your doctor may have recommended a different dose from the one listed here.
Store Prostin VR (Alprostadil) in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. Once the medication has been prepared by dilution, it must be used within 24 hours, after which it must be discarded. Protect from light and keep out of reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. While your baby is receiving Prostin VR (Alprostadil), health care professionals in the hospital will be monitoring your baby for any possible side effects. The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people using Prostin VR (Alprostadil). Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.
Contact your doctor if your baby experiences these side effects and they are severe or bothersome.
