Dosage

The usual starting dose of Champix (Varenicline) is 0.5 mg once daily for the first 3 days, then 0.5 mg twice daily for the next 4 days, then continue on 0.5 mg twice daily or increase to 1 mg twice daily thereafter. The maximum dose of Champix (Varenicline) is 1 mg twice daily. Champix (Varenicline) should be taken with a full glass of water, after eating.

Champix (Varenicline) is intended to be used in combination with quit-smoking education and counselling. There are 3 different approaches to setting a date to quit smoking (the "quit date"). Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about which method would be best for you.

  • In the fixed quit approach, start treatment with Champix (Varenicline) 1 to 2 weeks before the date you have set to quit smoking and continue for 12 weeks.
  • In the flexible quit approach, start taking Champix (Varenicline), then set a date to quit smoking between weeks 2 and 5 after the start of treatment. Treatment should be continued for 12 weeks. For those who succeed in quitting smoking during this time, an additional 12 weeks of treatment may be recommended by their doctor to reduce the risk that they will start smoking again.
  • In the gradual quit approach, start taking Champix (Varenicline) and decrease smoking with a goal to quit smoking by the end of 12 weeks. If you are able to, you may quit smoking at any time before the end of 12 weeks. Continue taking Champix (Varenicline) for an additional 12 weeks, to make up a total of 24 weeks of treatment.

Your doctor may suggest that you gradually decrease the dose of Champix (Varenicline) as you stop the medication, to reduce the risk of you starting to smoke again.

People who fail to quit smoking during the first 12-week treatment are encouraged to try again once they have identified and addressed the factors that may have caused them to have trouble quitting.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that Champix (Varenicline) be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, and it is within a few hours of the missed dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store Champix (Varenicline) at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
